From Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s iconic double denim look to modern high-waisted jeans, denim never goes out of style—and this season is no exception.
With the early 2000s making a fashion comeback, it’s not surprising that one of the most popular looks on the runway this spring is old-school denim-on-denim. But the denim trend isn’t for just celebrities and runways. You can wear this look too!
Here are my top tips to help you style the ultra-cool double denim trend…
Start Slow
If you feel intimidated by denim-on-denim, ease your way into it by mixing denim clothing and accessories—think blue jeans with a white tee and denim bag, or a denim dress with denim heels and a neutral bag.
You don’t need to go for the full head-to-toe look right off the bat (although if you want to, go for it!). In the look below, I’ve offset the denim with a plain white top and matching ankle boots.
Once you’re ready to go for the full double denim look, you have two options: buy a matching set or search for a denim jacket that matches the shade of your favorite jeans.
Layer Different Shades
Create a more balanced look by mixing light and dark wash denim. I love this true blue varsity jacket from EB Denim.
If you want to go darker, grey and black jeans are also having a moment. Darker colors work well for the office or a more professional vibe.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is bleached denim. You can dress up this laid-back wash with a fitted top, or add some polish with a blazer and heels.

As for the cut, you can safely pack your skinny jeans away. This year it’s all about loose-fitting, straight-leg, and bootcut jeans, and the relaxed look is here to stay. Think 90s grunge but more elevated.
